At the Table Games

Sit down. Play games.

No April Game

So I worked on a few games in April but none of them got to a playtestable state. I take that back, my Ha! variant, Dice for Glory is ready for playtests I just need to finish putting it into a visually pleasing format. The rules are all written but the game almost screams to be filled with illustrative pictures. I have yet to take those pictures so I don’t want to put it out yet.

The good news is that I plan on having the pictures done in May and I’m working on another game that should be ready by the end of May. The bad news is I’m a month behind on Games Galore. I don’t really feel like a failure as I did a lot of design work and built up quite a lot of back log for me to dive into next year (none of my April designs seemed to be one month projects).

I’ll be back in May with a game that Chris Urinko and I are working on. It is very bare bones right now, things are arbitrarily costed and untested but I hope to get a few plays in over the month and have those changes in by the time we release it to you. Chris is doing some great stuff so that it will be easy to print and play. Let me warn you now, there are lots of cards to print for this game but I will be presenting it in a way where you can print out the two player version without having to print the whole 289 cards (more like 145).

As far as Gears of the Worm God goes, the artists are plugging away, the text is being edited and I’m hard at work on the second book. That means that we are on track for the first book and I am struggling to keep up with my players, we will be diving into third book content here in May.

Long Live Devil’s Reach

So a lot happened this past week as the Devil’s Reach project came to a close. First I want to thank you, my Loyal Readers for all of your support! This project would not have been a success if not for you. The first piece of big news is that the project closed out at $2,738 which means that there will be more art in each adventure which I’m sure you will all love!

The next big news is something that I didn’t want to rush to tell you before it was ready or the project was over. Each and every backer will be receiving the full color wallpaper of the Within the Devil’s Reach cover! Storn had some important personal matters to deal with so we were not able to get the preview image out to you before the project closed. We will get it to you as soon as we can so that you can build your anticipation even more for these awesome adventures!

The last piece of big news I wanted to share with you is that Joe McDaldno has joined the team! Joe will be doing layout for Within the Devil’s Reach which means that the production value will be far beyond what I could have achieved alone. This is going to be a learning process for me as Joe teaches me the ins and outs of layout design.

There is a lot of work to get done still before Devil’s Reach gets into your hands. I am very excited to be working with such a top notch team for this! To let you know where we are in the process, the text for the three adventures is in Tom’s hands, most of the art orders have been placed with Storn, and sketches of the maps are awaiting Dyson’s transformation into glorious cartography. I am hard at work on the adventures for the next book already (my players have already played some of it) and I’m nailing down concepts for the rest of the adventures to come. Kryos is out there and he knows his time of rebirth has come!

Woodland Creatures

This is my attempt to do an Apocalypse World hack for kids.

Set up:
Each player takes a creature and four tokens.

The Mouse
Sneaky: +2, Courageous: +1, Selfish: +1, Helpful: -1
Special Power: Being small.
You took something from one of the other creatures, tell us what it was and take a token from them.
You owe one of the other creatures for helping you, tell us what they did and give them a token.

The Bear
Sneaky: 0, Courageous: +1,
Selfish: +1, Helpful: +1
Special Power: Being strong.
You got in a fight with one of the other creatures, tell us what about and take a token from them.
One of the other creatures is your best friend, tell us who and why and give them a token.

The Pig
Sneaky: -1, Courageous: +2,
Selfish: +1, Helpful: +1
Special Power: Being sturdy.
You got caught by one of the other creatures taking things from the food tree, tell us who and take a token from them.
You stood up for one of the other creatures when they were being made fun of, tell us what happened and give them a token.

The Rabbit
Sneaky: -1, Courageous: +1,
Selfish: +2, Helpful: +1
Special Power: Being speedy.
You and one of the other creatures were running away from trouble and you got away but they didn’t, tell us who and what the trouble was and take a token from them.
You came to the rescue of one of the other creatures, tell us about why they needed saving and give them a token.

Everyone starts each game with four empty harm slots. If they are all filled your character takes -1 to all rolls until the start of the next game.

When you do something Sneaky;
10+: No one sees you or you take a token.
7-9: Someone wants to know what your doing.
6 or less: Someone tells on you.

When you do something Courageous;
10+: You impress people or you take a token.
7-9: Someone thinks you were too risky.
6 or less: You take one harm.

When you do something Selfish;
10+: What you did or got was exactly what you wanted or you take a token.
7-9: Someone saw you and is disappointed.
6 or less: Someone was hurt by what you did.

When you do something Helpful ;
10: Someone saw what you did and is proud of you or you take a token.
7-9: Someone thinks you are doing it selfishly.
6 or less: It costs you something to do it.

When you use your special power you may use tokens 1-for-1 to increase your result.

How to play:

Some woodland creature has a problem and wants some help. Play to find out what happens.

All characters are woodland creatures and they are names Mr. or Mrs. Whatever-they-are.

If no move is triggered say yes.

Let the results of the rolls guide play.

Exciting News!

Today we passed both the 65 & 70% mark and my legs are so very tired from all of that dancing! This is because of you, Loyal Readers. You are amazing and I cannot give you enough thanks!

The project has run out half of it’s time and no one has yet to snatch up either of the top two levels. I went ahead and dropped the price on both of the top two tiers in the hopes that they will look a bit more attractive. I wanted to let you all know first just in case there was a reward that you wanted that was just out of your reach.

You can now get my help writing a custom adventure for only $175 (down from $250) and you can get your custom adventure into the book and get your hands on that fantastic piece of art from Storn Cook for only $200 (down from $300)!

Be sure to keep your eyes out for what we will be doing for stretch goals as well. I expect to be announcing them some time next week if we keep on track. Thank you so much for your support! Because of you we are so much closer to our goal. Keep up the great work of spreading the word!

Half Way There

20120301-171919.jpg

With 23 days to go we stand just under [edit: make that just over!!!] half way to our goal! This is all because of you, Loyal Readers! I hope that you who are already backers have been enjoying your preview look at the Ziggurat of the Sun Princess adventure! It will be out early next week for everyone to enjoy. What I wanted to share with you was a new pledge level that I just added to the project.

For $300 you can own the original, ink drawing of “The Aspect of Kryos” (the beast that is the cover image for this page) by Storn Cook. You will get all of the rewards that a $250 backer would get including, signed print copies of all of the Gears of the Worm God adventure books, a limited edition, hardbound copy of the Gears collection, and my help writing a Dungeon World adventure in the style of the Gears adventure. The adventure we collaborate on will be featured in the Within the Devil’s Reach PDF (and the book if there is room) and in the hardback collection!

Think hard but think quick, I don’t expect this reward to be unclaimed for long!

The Kickstarter is Up and Running

This morning saw the launch of the Within the Devil’s Reach Kickstarter! I am very excited and nervous about doing this but I know that with your help these adventures will be amazing!

I am counting on you, my loyal readers, to help me push this project to be all it can be. Talk about it on forums, talk about it in your local game store, post about it on your blog, and talk about it on your podcasts. Share your excitement with others and back the project if you can. If you talk about Within the Devil’s Reach out in public let me know so that I can send more traffic your way.

Your support and enthusiasm about this project so far has made it worth it already! Keep watching here as I post updates about how the project is going and what plans I have in the future to make Within the Devil’s Reach and the Gears of the Worm God even more awesome. Thank you again for being so completely awesome and supportive, I just can’t say that enough.

What Makes My Adventure Unique?

The Kickstarter for Within the Devil’s Reach is now live!

When I was designing the first adventure for Within the Devil’s Reach, one thing I did to try and fill players in quickly to the backstory and allow them to put their own stamp on the world, was to include three questions. As the project grew to three adventures I went a bit further and created three questions that bound the group together and then three more questions for each adventure. During playtesting these questions proved their worth time and again.

I have tweeked the questions as I’ve gone along so that they do their job even better. During character creation, probably while players are working out their bonds, the GM will ask the player’s why they came to the town of Devil’s Reach, how they caught the attention of the great wizard Alastor, and why they are serving him. When the players answer the question’s the GM is learning a lot of things about how the group sees Alastor and how they see themselves.

By asking the questions in a leading way GMs are able to bypass some of the more bothersome aspects of founding a group based on a common NPC. The adventures assume that the party is working for Alastor of their own free will and so do the questions. The adventures also assume that Alastor likes or admires the characters and so do the questions. By asking these questions at the start of the campaign you are building a shared history that compliments the bonds that the players are creating between their characters’. Before the players answer the questions the GM knows very little about Alastor but by the end of the questions the great wizard should have a solid personality.

The questions at the start of each adventure allow the GM to use the players’ feedback to customize the adventure for them. These questions are subjective which allows the GM to twist the answers and give the players both what they expect and surprises in equal measure.

Part of what makes the questions so much fun is how the player’s will tend to build on each other’s answers. I’ve seen this in all of my playtest’s so far. I had one player introduce that he had come to Devil’s Reach to help with an outbreak of a plague and another player added in that it was rumored that the new stranger in town was a plague carrier. This sort of snowball effect totally changed the town of Devil’s Reach for that group as well as shifting their focus.

My hope is that each version of Alastor and Devil’s Reach will be unique allowing players to replay the adventures with different groups and have a new experience each time. Using questions to customize the adventure and to tie the adventures and the party together is a theme I plan on keeping up with in each of the books in the Gears of the Worm God cycle. The next book has the party traveling across a section of the world that is full of conflict. As relative nobodies the party will be mostly reacting to events that are taking place but in the fourth and fifth books the party will be taking an active roll in world events. The questions in the coming books will make each campain wildly different while at the same time giving every campaign touchstones that are the same and can be shared.

Harlin’s Almanac on Hold

For the time being Harlin’s Almanac will be on hold. I’m not sure what will happen with it at this point but if you are as excited as I am about getting great stock fantasy artwork out there for the community to use please put your support behind the Monster Art project.

I want to take a moment and tell you why Harlin’s Almanac has to pause for now but I don’t have the words. A fact about who I am came to light to a friend of mine, the art director for HA, Paco Garcia and he had to step away from the project. I don’t have the words to describe how sorry I am that something I do has brought up painful memories to a friend of mine. I understand and respect Paco’s decision and I hope that all of you, my loyal readers, will as well. This was not an easy decision on his part and I know that he did not come to it lightly.

I’m not sure what this means for Harlin’s Almanac in the future. Right now I am too heart broken over the pain I caused Paco to think about it. Life is a funny thing. Read Paco’s post and give him your support. Thank you.

Why Do a Kickstarter?

The Kickstarter for Within the Devil’s Reach is now live!

The ideas behind the Gears of the Worm God cycle of adventure books has steadily grown over the last few weeks. Originally I was thinking I would do everything myself, write the adventures, draw some stick-figure art, rough up some maps, and then put out a free PDF. As I started playtesting and realized how awesome these adventures are I wanted to do more with them.

So I contacted Storn Cook, Dyson Logos, and Tom Cadorette about really making this project sing. All of these guys are professionals and I want to pay them for the fantastic work they are doing. The problem is, I am not what you might think of as well off. My family and I are not starving but we have a strict budget that would allow me to pull together the funds to do a project like this in three or four years (barring emergencies) and I wanted to have Within the Devil’s Reach out when the final release of Dungeon World is ready at this year’s Gencon.

The other big reason I decided to do a Kickstarter was to find out from you, my loyal readers, and the gaming world in general if you adventures for Dungeon World are really what you want. I know that I love adventures especially seeing the different ways that different groups take on the same challenges. How many others are as interested in that as I am? That’s what I aim to find out by doing a Kickstarter. It will also give me an idea of how important it is for you to have a physical copy rather than just a PDF. Knowing that will help me decide if I should print more physical copies or just sell the PDF here.

Doing a Kickstarter is about testing the waters. If it is successful, being able to pay great people to do some amazing work so that you who fund this project can have the best adventures I can bring you. It is about finding out what you want so that I can give it to you. I hope that if Within the Devil’s Reach excites you, you get out there and talk it up to your friends. Get them excited about it and tell them to spread the word as well. Even if you are like me and can’t fund every awesome project that you see I hope you do what I do and try and share the news with everyone you can, on twitter, on facebook, on G+, at your game store, at your game night. Share with them your excitement!

Thank you so much for your continued support! I have already had so many people tell me how excited they are about Within the Devil’s Reach and the Gears of the Worm God cycle that I already feel like a success and I haven’t moved one copy yet! You, my loyal readers, you are awesome and I know with your help we will push this project well over the goal line!

Why Three Adventures

The Kickstarter for Within the Devil’s Reach is now live!

Some of you may be wondering why I’m doing three adventures in one book and I will agree, it is an odd choice when you look back on gaming adventures. I originally intended to put out the first two adventures as one big adventure (there is a clue in the first that leads to the second and at the time I was thinking of them as one adventure) but I decided to break off the second half of the first adventure into it’s own thing and expand on it a bit.

Well I had already planned on including that adventure in the book and both of those adventures and the second (now third) adventure takes place in the same town. So I figured, rather than reintroduce the town of Devil’s Reach in three small books, which would really hike up the page count and thus the price to you, I would combine all three adventures into one and make sure that the story that needs to come to light can come to light if any of the three adventures is played by itself and yet they work together to show a more complete picture.

Another reason is cost. Yes, I already mentioned cost when I was talking about page bloat but this cost would have hurt you, my loyal readers, even more. The cost is in art work. I don’t want to skimp on you guys and so I went to one of the most amazing artists I know (I’ll tell you who in a post later on) and he was more than happy to sign on. The interior art was simple enough to work out but full color cover art can get mighty expensive when you are talking about art of this quality. This made my decision very simple. I could either make three smaller books with each book having a higher price or I could combine the three into one larger book which would cost less than two books to you, my loyal readers.

The final factor that helped decide me when it came to doing three adventures in one book was that I liked the precedent it set for the books to come in the Gears Cycle. Book two, tentatively titled Ghosts from the Past, fits nicely into the three adventure mold, as do books four and five. Book three may be interesting. I’m still playing around with ideas for that one, all of it takes place back in Devil’s Reach and all of the impending dooms are pretty dire, but I have some ideas floating around in my head and like all the rest of the books, I would really recommend playing all the adventures to really get the most out of it.

Some of you may still be scratching your heads wondering what I am thinking and thats ok, grab a copy when it comes out. Decide for yourself if this is a crazy idea. I’m sure this won’t be the last crazy thing I do before all is said and done.
